Blue Dot Chair

I'm reviewing the furniture here more than the store. I have 2 blue dot pieces, the nick table and a felt Paramount chair. I like both pieces design-wise, but I'm not terribly happy with their construction. First off, the foam in the Paramount chair is rather lightweight, which means that it's deforming over time, ruining the clean lines of the chair. Also it's not that comfortable and feels a bit cheap to sit in. The chair is 2 years old and I can already envision the day in the not too distant future, when I'll have to replace it. As for the Nick table, it's made of finish grade plywood. I knew that going in and am not unhappy about it since I really like the design. I am a bit unhappy however with the durability of the finish. The table scratches quite easily and I haven't yet figured out how to repair or refinish the scratches, which may not even be possible given the thinness of the finished top. Really the top needs a more durable finish for this application. It's akin to using wall panelling for a table top. I do like the table, so I may end up adding a coat of polyurethane to it myself for durability. Still, the table cost around $900 so I don't think I should have to do that at that price. Blue Dot seems to employ the marketing strategy, so common in the furniture industry, of overpricing everything then putting it perpetually on sale making it seem like a bargain. Still, for the prices I paid for both of these items “on sale” I could have gotten better made pieces, though probably not as stylish. I do like the design but the need to seriously up their execution too.

I can't say enough good things about Blu Dot. We furnished most of our apartment with Blu Dot furniture, which is high quality and beautiful yet at mid-range prices (think slightly more expensive than CB2, but significantly cheaper than most other Soho show rooms). The service is also what stands out. A couple of pieces were delivered with minor defects and the staff, especially Molly (store manager) went out of their way to make sure everything was fixed/replaced so that we were 100% satisfied with our purchases. Great design, great value and amazing service.

We had the pleasure of having JT and Molly help us at the Soho store. They were great. We really like our sofa and they made we were well taken care of. Blu Dot really did right by us and we will definitely be shopping there in the future. We also had the pleasure of having Ken help us out at the Minneapolis location. He really went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with our Blu Dot delivery in Minneapolis. Great company, great products, great staff and customer service.

I love me some Blu Dot. But I hate this showroom. For a modern line, in SoHo, Blu Dot is surprisingly affordable. Yet the showroom keeps the same aura of pretention as any other SoHo gallery. I walked in and was promptly ignored. I checked out what I wanted to check out, and left. Unfortunately their designs are so damn awesome, that I ended up buying their stuff online anyhow. I never had any of the problems that others listed. In fact, I was really happy with the ordering experience — they were very proactive with my backordered sofa.

1. I placed the order for a bed as far back as June 10 and paid white glove delivery service. 2. For the first delivery (1.5 months later on July 22nd,) I stayed home, and took one day off work to wait for the order to arrive. The headboard and one drawer is scratched. I have to return them. But the delivery guy says they can't pack up all the pieces because they took the boxes apart already. Only able to pack up the headboard which came in a separate box. 3. My bedroom is not huge. Basically rest of the pieces and hardware laying around make my bedroom look like a construction site from July 22nd. 4. This morning (8/2) I got an email says it is being delivered by UPS. Which surprised me because I didn't know if UPS had white glove service. So I called CS, and confirmed it comes with white glove delivery and assembly. You said it is delivered by another company AVS, which should have white glove delivery and assembly. 5. On 8/2, when delivery guy arrived at 11:30 am, there is only one guy. He asked me for help to get the headboard up the stairs (which was surprising, since I ordered white glove delivery), but still I didn't mind put in some labor in. So I helped him carry it upstairs. He says he isn't responsible to assemble it. 6. That is when I called and find out that Blu Dot send delivery out without ordering white glove and assembly. 7. Now they say, they'll send someone to assemble it. Looks more and more like that I would have to wait home another day for assembly guy to come, which is still TBD. (I really hoping for today because then I don't have to take off another day). Now, my bed room have even more pieces, even more of a construction site with boxes, debris, and pieces, I don't even have room to put down my mattress on the floor now. How long does Blu Dot expect me to live like this? Furthermore, I only have 12 vacation days per year. I just moved to SF and started this new job. I already took 2 vacation days to stay home for the first and second deliveries. Now I am expected to take another day. That is 25% of all my vacation. Since I just started this job in SF, I don't even have that many vacation days accrued. They offer more insult by offering to refund the “white glove” service only. As I can't put the bed together myself, basically I would getting a bunch of rubble. I'll update this review if they resolve this adequately. (Besides, the furniture is just all verneer and plywood. It isn't much better quality than ikea. It is a little better quality. But is it 5 times the price quality? No. And even with Ikea, I never opened a box and see the stuff is already scratched. When the delivery guy opened the box, and pointed out all the scratches (deep also) on the headboard, I was shocked.
