Wegner Wishbone Chair

Wegner Wishbone Chair

Description In 1944, Danish designer Hans Wegner began a series of chairs that were inspired by portraits of Danish merchants sitting in Ming Chairs. One of these chairs was the Wishbone Chair , also known as the “Y” or “CH-24,” which has been produced by the Danish firm Carl Hansen & Søn since 1950. The son of a shoemaker, Wegner was trained as a cabinetmaker before attending the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, after which he began his career as an architect. Just three years later, Wegner started his own design office, and his work soon caught the eye of the folks at Carl Hansen & Søn. The light, sculptural Wishbone Chair was exactly what the Hansen company was looking for to supplement the heavier forms that were popular at the time. However, the Wishbone was a challenging chair to make, as this steam-bent solid wood frame demands perfect craftsmanship and an intimate knowledge of wood joinery. Even today, the seat is still hand woven from paper cord, a durable material developed during WWII as a substitute for jute. Using the best natural materials, the sculptural Wishbone is made to last for generations and offers outstanding sitting comfort. Made in Denmark. Optional semi-aniline leather seat pad available separately. Carl Hansen & Son is presenting the first-ever elm version of Hans Wegner’s Wishbone Chair, available in a limited edition to celebrate the designer’s birthday. This special-edition Wishbone Chair is made of oil-treated elm with a natural, woven paper cord seat. Each chair features the date and Wegner’s signature discreetly engraved on the interior of the frame. Orders must be placed by April 30. View All Images

Hans Wegner Hans Jørgensen Wegner’s (1914 – 2007) high-quality and thoughtful work contributed to the international popularity of mid-century Danish design. His style is often described as Organic Functionality, a modernist school with emphasis on functionality, arising primarily in Scandinavian countries. In his lifetime, he designed over 500 different chairs, over 100 of which were put into mass production, with many recognizable icons among them. Born to cobbler Peter M. Wegner, he worked as a child apprentice to Master cabinetmaker H. F. Stahlberg. With an affinity for wood, he attended the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and the Architectural Academy in Copenhagen. In 1936, he began studies at what is now The Danish Design School, with O. Mølgaard Nielsen as teacher.

Carl Hansen & Son A workshop in Odense, Denmark in 1908, was the birthplace of the Carl Hansen company. With a fast reputation for quality work, Carl Hansen confidently took on large projects like dining room sets and bedroom suites. However, Hansen eventually learned to capitalize on scaled-back versions of his popular sellers, realizing that their strongest asset was its hand craftsmanship and rationality. Carl Hansen invited Hans Wegner to create designs in 1949, launching a mutually beneficial relationship bringing success to the company and exposure to the young Wegner. Wegner was still relatively unknown, but soon gained wide acclaim that continues to today.

They arrived and look exactly as described/pictured. They seem to be very sturdy and look great!-Wes Terryamazing chairsJust sitting in this wonderful chair lifts my mood! I love the unusual design, the mix of materials, the somewhat rustic yet modern look — everything comes together nicely in this unique piece. Also, the interesting contrast between the natural hemp seat and the solid wood finish complements the modern decor of my home just perfectly. Comfortable and stylish, and best of all, super affordable, this chair was a great way to spruce up my house.-Samantha RoyceWishbone chairsI love the simplicity of this Wishbone Chair by Rove Concepts and most of all the light and clean color of it. The natural cord seats makes it look elegant and simple, which look combined with the shape and material gives this true piece of art. I have ordered in total two chairs and I have to say they look amazing. Everyone looking for elegant and tasteful furniture should order one.-hcheng.abcomwishbone chairI bought 2 wishbone (ash wood with walnut finish). They do looks great. Given the slight imperfections in the craftsmanship (ie stain bubbles and small wood imperfections where two pieces join, black etching on areas of the legs, and the two chairs not the same size slightly), I was a little disappointed. But for the price and their very GOOD after sale services, I do think they were worth it. Will try leather product, hope could be better.-rabia.sheikh777@gmail.comBeautifulReceived my chairs this morning. Wow!! Fast delivery, excellent quality, superb customer service.
